The Sunday after Pentecost is often recognized as Trinity Sunday.
John 10:30, 36-38, 20:21-22, 2 Corinthians 13:11-13
…But we can’t let the questions block us from the goodness of God. Ask questions, but don’t get stuck in them. If one only ponders the redness of a rose…How is it so red?! Why red and not purple or black? Why doesn’t it taste good when it looks so good?
…one might never really get to the enjoyment the rose’s redness.
Not to minimalize it, but the trinity is simply a description. That’s it. It’s descriptive of how the Christian faith has come to understand the way God has been revealed and seen in creation and the scriptures.
And it’s beautiful. God is beautiful in diversity.
Our call to reflect God’s image is a responsible call to reflect the Trinity in all of God’s love, creative activity, and desire to love outside of oneself.
It’s true - the faith believes that God is one and God is three at the same time, all the time. It’s a beautiful concept. But don’t get lost in the explanation as much as the mystery and wonder that something, someOne (God), and someone (us) can live into such a way of being.
John 10:30, 36-38, 20:21-22
“I and the Father are one.” …
“So how can you say that the one whom the Father has made holy and sent into the world insults God because he said, ‘I am God’s Son’? If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me. But if I do them, and you don’t believe me, believe the works so that you can know and recognize that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” …
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
II Corinthians 13:11-13
Finally, brothers and sisters, good-bye. Put things in order, respond to my encouragement, be in harmony with each other, and live in peace—and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Say hello to each other with a holy kiss. All of God’s people say hello to you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Prayer1
Almighty and everlasting God,
You have given to us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity,
and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity:
Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship,
and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father;
who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
