Luke 22:39-46 | Philippians 4:21-23 | Gospels during Lent: Matthew 7-9
Have you ever imagined that if Jesus was just right beside you in the flesh, encouraging you to the best possible course for your life, it would be so much easier?
He was right there, told the disciples to pray and not give in to temptation.
AND THEY FELL ASLEEP.
Even then, Jesus simply gave them the same instructions: Pray so that you won’t give in to temptation.
What grace.
Luke 22:39-46
Jesus left and made his way to the Mount of Olives, as was his custom, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived, he said to them, “Pray that you won’t give in to temptation.” He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed. He said, “Father, if it’s your will, take this cup of suffering away from me. However, not my will but your will must be done.” Then a heavenly angel appeared to him and strengthened him. He was in anguish and prayed even more earnestly. His sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. When he got up from praying, he went to the disciples. He found them asleep, overcome by grief. He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you won’t give in to temptation.”
Philippians 4:21-23
Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters with me send you their greeting. All God’s people here, especially those in Caesar’s household, send you their greeting. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirits.
Prayer
God,
I, like the disciples, am sleepy. I know what’s best, but putting one foot in front of the other seems elusive. I have all sorts of excuses to fail, by the way. (Even the disciples did, I’m only human, It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, etc., blah, blah, blah.
But it’s tiring. I’m tired of disappointing myself, you, and those who know me well.
So help me, God: Give me the capacity to do your righteousness in all things, big and small.
By your spirit & in Christ,
Amen.
