We can imagine in a world where recordings of any sort don’t exist (video, sound, etc.) and word-of-mouth is the main dissemination of info and news, rumors would take on a different life. But fear not, the chief priests and Pharisees of the first century thought of everything!
In actuality, many scholars believe that Matthew included this passage (and 28:11-15) to refute the very rumor they sought to avoid.
Matthew 27:62-66
The next day, which was the day after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate. They said, “Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will arise.’ Therefore, order the grave to be sealed until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people, ‘He’s been raised from the dead.’ This last deception will be worse than the first.”
Pilate replied, “You have soldiers for guard duty. Go and make it as secure as you know how.” Then they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
Prayer
God,
Thank you for Mondays. (Actually, I really mean that - I enjoy the new beginning.)
As I begin this one, I begin it with you. I’ll say “amen” here in a second, but let me not forget your presence with me all day. Work within me and through me.
Help me be productive in responsibility and productive in rest. Fill me with good food and keep me healthy. Protect my loved ones, keep us from evil. Yet help us to stand within the difficulties that may come our way, bolstered by your love to be an example of true strength, even as it may appear as weakness.
By your spirit & in Christ,
Amen.
