Luke 14:34-35 | Psalm 131
It really is remarkable how the vast majority of scripture is written directly for the people who are already a part of the people of God and not for the world. Of course, there’s a message for everyone in scripture, but too often, the Church has used scripture to beat against those who don’t affirm scripture.
It’s odd.
Regardless, this thing about salt losing its essence isn’t about food.
It’s about the people of God.
Luke 14:34-35
“Salt is good. But if salt loses its flavor, how will it become salty again? It has no value, neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. People throw it away. Whoever has ears to hear should pay attention.”
Psalm 131
Lord, my heart isn’t proud;
my eyes aren’t conceited.
I don’t get involved with things too great or wonderful for me.
No. But I have calmed and quieted myself
like a weaned child on its mother;
I’m like the weaned child that is with me.
Israel, wait for the Lord—
from now until forever from now!
Prayer
God,
The Church really does seem lackluster these days. At least, the public persona held in majority view seems so unChristlike. I know there are countless unknown Jesus-lovers doing righteousness in places most of us haven’t heard about nor would touch with our vacation money.
But that’s the thing, isn’t it? We justify our luxuries and comforts at an expense way cheaper than the cost of grace. And we thus cheapen what you have done for us.
So help me, God: Don’t let me make your work anything less than what it is. Remind me of the first love. Make my heart beat with Jesus.
By your spirit & in Christ,
Amen.
