As we wrap up Mary’s song today, she reminds us that this isn’t simply about her, though she has certainly demonstrated praise, joy, and gratitude for what God has done for her and through her. But her song concludes with certainty about what God is doing for all of Israel. (Remember that Israel is a people - Abraham’s descendants.)
Staying with Elizabeth for a third of her pregnancy is notable. (Where is Joseph?)
If anyone hears about Mary’s youth and meekness/humility and thinks her a flighty know-nothing, all they need to do is read her song. Mary’s a powerful woman. But also humble. This is the crucible where God does God’s work.
Luke 1:53-56
He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty-handed. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, remembering his mercy, just as he promised to our ancestors, to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.”
Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.
Isaiah 55:1-2
All of you who are thirsty, come to the water! Whoever has no money, come, buy food and eat! Without money, at no cost, buy wine and milk! Why spend money for what isn’t food, and your earnings for what doesn’t satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is good; enjoy the richest of feasts.
Prayer
God,
It’s Monday. I don’t suppose which day of the week it is really matters to you except that every seventh day is sabbath. But you know how much we humans benefit from organization and naming things and all.
Indeed, Monday is the beginning of the work week, a time to remember agendas, appointments, and schedules. Help me with these things, God, but keep me from being a slave to them. Especially in the rat race that the week leading to Christmas can so often be, remind me of your paced progression to salvation.
Give me the freedom of Christ. Help me to smile with Jesus, to laugh with him, to be real with him, and to eat/rest/play with his presence by your spirit. Even if for momentary seconds at a time, give me such things to keep me from thinking I’m more than I am. At the same time, help me to remember your love for me and the whole world.
By your spirit & in Christ,
Amen.
Just waking from a three hour nap and need to engage in final sermon prep on my Sabbath. I have often wondered is that considered work?
