Like many books of the Bible, the Gospel of John seems to have had two different endings. These two verses for today feel like a conclusion. And yet, we get another whole chapter (an incredible one, which we’ll look at over the next couple of days).
But here we have a notable summary: Jesus did many other things that are not written in this book. Of course he did. How could a book possibly contain everything? This is a reminder that Jesus lived a real human life, fully embedded in the created world. He ate. He slept. He traveled. He laughed. He felt fatigue. The gospels give us high points—moments of healing, teaching, confrontation, and glory—but they don’t detail every part of Jesus’ daily life.
That matters. It reminds us that not every moment of our lives needs to feel like a mountaintop. Most of discipleship is about steady faithfulness in the small things. The kingdom of God is grown in gardens and kitchens, not just pulpits and miracles. We wake up. We work. We rest. We pray. And through it all, we remain open to what God might do in any moment—whether it feels holy or ordinary.
That makes the final verse here even more powerful: that you might believe, and that by believing, you might have life in his name. Belief is not just intellectual agreement. It is a way of being. It’s trust that shapes how we live, how we spend our time, how we treat others, how we carry hope into each day. It’s a posture toward the world, anchored in the person of Christ.
And that, too, is good news.
John 20:30-31
Then Jesus did many other miraculous signs in his disciples’ presence, signs that aren’t recorded in this scroll. But these things are written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Christ, God’s Son, and that believing, you will have life in his name.
Psalm 62:5-8
Oh, I must find rest in God only, because my hope comes from him! Only God is my rock and my salvation—my stronghold!—I will not be shaken. My deliverance and glory depend on God. God is my strong rock. My refuge is in God. All you people: Trust in him at all times! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our refuge!
Prayer
God,
Thank you for yet another new day. Where I sit, the sun is shining and the grass is both green and wet with the overnight dew—all signs of energy and life.
Lord, I’ve got a lot of stuff ahead of me today. None of it is groundbreaking or life-changing, at least as far as I can tell. But all of it is contributive. So help me to be faithful in it all.
By your Spirit & in Christ,
Amen.
