Just how much stuff could people collect in 1st century Galilee? Were there self-storage facilities? (Today, the self-storage industry is predicted to hit over $80 billion by 2027.1)
This is yet another Matthew 5-7 passage wherein we apparently ask, “Is that a command or just nice advice from Jesus?” Who ranks Stop collecting treasures as an actual command of Jesus on par with not committing adultery or not stealing?
It’s likely that many see this as someone else’s problem. It’s easy enough to dismiss as long as we can think of someone else who has more than us. But that’s not the way discipleship works, is it?
It’s a good thing for each of us who are following Jesus to take this command seriously. Shedding things (real tangible stuff) can actually be quite a spiritual experience. It can also be very hard for some of us.
But, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21
“Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moth and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust don’t eat them and where thieves don’t break in and steal them. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Prayer
God,
Jesus didn’t have much, did he? As he reminds us not to store up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal, help me to focus on what truly matters. Teach me to let go of the unnecessary, the clutter that distracts me from your presence. Guide my heart to find joy in simplicity, to cherish what is eternal, and to seek first your kingdom. May my life reflect your love, unburdened by the weight of excess, and may my treasure always be in you.
By your spirit & in Christ,
Amen.

Beautiful prayer. Thank you!
